About Glasgow Airport
Glasgow Airport is located 8 miles west of Glasgow City Centre, near the towns of Paisley and Renfrew in Renfrewshire.
In 2010 Glasgow Airport handled over 6.5 million passengers making it the second busiest airport in Scotland, after Edinburgh Airport. Glasgow Airport is owned and operated by BAA, which also owns and operates a number of other major UK Airports.
Glasgow Airport is a base for a number of airlines including BMI Regional, EasyJet, Flybe and Loganair, Jet2, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways; and British Airways has maintenance facilities here.
Glasgow Airport was first opened in 1966 and originally only flew to UK and European destinations. The British Airports Authority (BAA) took control of Glasgow Airport in 1975 and after privatisation in the 1980s, Glasgow Airport started to offer flights to other places around the world; this was at the expense of Prestwick Airport.
Today Glasgow Airport is the main passenger carrier with Prestwick Airport playing a secondary role with budget airlines and major freight flights.
The terminal at Glasgow Airport has three piers catering for: West (International), Central (Domestic) and East (Low-cost, Ireland & Scottish islands).
