About Durham Airport
Durham Airport is located approximately 5 miles southeast of Darlington, about 10 miles southwest of Middlesbrough and 24 miles south of Durham. Durham Airport serves County Durham and parts of North Yorkshire. Most local residents still refer to it by its previous name, Tees-side Airport.
Durham Airport is one of the United Kingdom's smaller airports, but offers links to several domestic and European destinations. Durham Airport was originally an RAF Station, the airfield became Teesside International Airport in the 1960s and was renamed Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004.
Durham Airport passenger numbers peaked in 2006 when the airport was used by 917,963 passengers, but dropped back to 224,673 in 2010, the lowest number of passengers seen at Durham Airport since 1975.
In November 2010, Durham Airport introduced a passenger levy of £6 to curb the airports losses. In spite of the introduction of the Passenger Facility Fee, Durham Airport has had a considerable increase in passenger numbers in the first part of 2011 with a 47% increase in January; and a 24% increase in February compared with 2010.
Durham Airport is owned by Peel Airports Limited; they also run Doncaster Airport and Liverpool Airport.
